Fuel for the Soul and the Body: Why What We Eat Matters to God

Have you ever noticed how your body tells on you?
When I’m fueling myself with foods that nourish me, my skin glows. My energy is good. I feel clear headed.
But when I fall into old habits of too much sugar, processed foods, not enough water…my body lets me know. I’m tired. Bloated. My skin breaks out. I don’t feel like myself.

Food either brings life or it slowly takes it away. And for me, that realization became a spiritual one, too.

For years, I found myself having an unhealthy relationship with food. Sometimes I was restricting, sometimes I was obsessing. I once found myself so wrapped up in a food tracking app that it began to control me. I remember eating one more can of tuna late one night just to hit my protein goal. I wasn’t hungry. I wasn’t enjoying my food. I was simply following numbers on a screen.

That’s when I knew something had to change.

God didn’t design food to be something that controls us. He designed it to sustain us. He wants it to bring life, not stress. Somewhere along the way, many of us women have let guilt, comparison, and confusion rob us of the joy of nourishing our bodies.

For me, when I finally deleted that app, I felt free.
I learned to listen again. I listened to
my body and to the Holy Spirit. I became aware, not obsessed. I began to see food not as the enemy, but as a gift. A tool for stewardship, not perfection.

Now, when I eat, I ask: “Will this bring life to my body?”
And if I choose the donut, I enjoy it…without guilt. Because I know my body, and I know the consequences. But I also know grace.

Eating well isn’t about restriction. It’s about respect.
Respect for the body God gave us.
Respect for the purpose He’s called us to fulfill.

1 Corinthians 10:31 (NLT)

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

What if we saw every bite as an act of worship? Not in fear or legalism, but in gratitude and stewardship…fueling our bodies so we can live the full, vibrant lives God intends for us.

Reflection:

Your plate can tell a story. One of freedom, gratitude, and stewardship.
So, the next time you sit down to eat, pause for a moment.
Thank God for the food in front of you.
Ask Him to help you choose what brings life.
And remember: your body is a temple, but it’s also a testimony.
